While traveling to Muncie
Indiana for the Muncie
Endurathon and stuck in traffic due to
construction on I-70, so exited the interstate and looked to find a back way to
Muncie. I passed a sign for
the Indiana HP so decided to
track it down.
This was once again before Google maps and before I purchased my first guide book, so it was not easy to track down not knowing where to look. This high point was not easy to find without any official directions so ended up asking several people for directions. Even most of the locals were not exactly sure where to find it.
Eventually in a woods offside the road near a farm. The hike was about 50 yards. There was a log that I signed. Snapped a few pictures to prove I'd found the hill. Strange high point for a state, there was no big mound and hardly appears as if it could be a high point. It was a fun adventure trying to find!

Ohio, my home state, and my very first highpoint achieved!
Here's how these little adventures were started. I was introduced to a co-worker that he and his wife would travel around the country visiting state highpoints. He would go for the weekend and the next week at work talk about where he had gone. I was in my early 20's at the time and while it was fascinating to listen to his stories, it wasn't until 5 years later that I made my state highpoint's maiden voyage.
I don't think the day even started out as a destination trip to visit a state highpoint, to my recollection it just happened that I was in the area of Bellfountaine, Oh riding motorcycle with my friend John. My bike I rode was my first motorcycle, a 1988 Honda Hawk GT 650. The country roads around Bellfountaine were inviting. My first time in the area and I happened to remember that Ohio's highpoint was somewhere nearby.
Back at this time there were no Google maps or cell phones, so when lost we would break out an old fashion map, fold it out and figure out how to get from here to there. I think every state's highpoint is labeled on maps, so we figured out we were not too far away and decided to see if we could find it. Without too much circling around we made it to the highpoint. I don't recall even if we had a camera at the time to snap a photo.
Ohio is not the hilliest state, however, this state high point is in a relatively non-Appalachian part of the state. There are lots of great rolling hills to be found in Ohio, but near the highpoint it's pretty much as flat as a pancake.
