Pacific Crest Trail:  Day 26

After only one PCT hike in 2024 today will mark our 4th time in 2025 on the trail.   We finished up two sections Day 21 and Day 22 of Section C and only a month ago had logged the first 14.6 miles of Section D.   There is usually one end  of the trail and the other is unknown, but this time one of the end points would be where the PCT crosses Route 2 (Angels Crest Highway) which has a large parking lot right off the road.

Logistics:  We recruited my friend Matt for a fun hot July hike on the PCT to Deep Creek Hot Springs and must have wet his appetite because he was willing to join us once again for today.   Thankfully as well because both Matt & Oobrianoo have AWD SUV's that can easily manage Sheep Creek Truck Trail.  This time the 3 of us would meet once again at McDonalds at Cajon Pass and take all three cars to trailheads.  I parked my car just off of Lone Pine Canyon Road and didn't have to drive up the switchbacks.   Matt and Oobrianoo would drive up and drop off Oobrianoo's car and the 3 of us would take Matt's car up to Rt. 2 intersection with PCT.   We would again hike southbound back to Oobrianoo's car.  My car was only 2 miles away at the bottom of the hill, so Oobrianoo dropped off Matt & I so we could retrieve his car together, meanwhile Oobrianoo could get a head start on his way back to San Diego.

We arrived at Inspiration Point where there is a large parking area.  There is a giant "Pacific Crest Trail" parking sign.  From the parking area Mt. Baden Powell is easily visible tho that peak is for an upcoming section.  There's actually a northbound hike for another 5 miles that will take you right to the trailhead, but for us we were heading the opposite direction.  What was instantly apparent is that the entire landscape for as far as the eyes could see was torched.   About 1 year ago the "Bridge Fire" ignited in the East Fork area of the San Gabriel Mountains and rapidly spread through steep and rugged terrain filled with chaparral, short grass and downed trees.   The first half of our hike would go thru the burned area.

The PCT skirts the edge of  Mountain High Ski area which miraculously was saved from the fire perhaps they had turned on all the snow makers and it helped save the resort from destruction.  While Baden Powell was behind us, we had magnificent views of Mt. Baldy and Iron Mountain off to the right all morning.    Around the ski area was a ton of heavy logging equipment and earth movers apparently trying to clean up the damage of the fire.   The earth movers pretty much annihilated the PCT so route finding was nearly impossible for quite some time.   We passed a PCT hiker coming from far ahead and she said the route behind her was destroyed.  I interpreted that as the immediate area she just hiked thru but later found out there was another section further down the trail that was all downed trees and was actually more harder to pass than the area around the ski area.

We passed an interesting sign attached to a tree, "beware of falling trees".   I wasn't sure if that was because of men knocking them over or if they were just unstable and could fall at any time.   An early winter storm rolled in 2 weeks ago and snowline was about 7,000 feet.  There was still some snow we had to navigate that hadn't melted.   There is a section of the PCT that is just to the north of the road that parallels the trail.   The view of the mountains to the right are much better viewed from the road so we hiked along the road for a mile and into Guffy Campground.  Because of the fire the road is closed so luckily traversing the road in a vehicle wasn't part of our plan.

A couple years ago I had driven this road to the trailhead to Pine Mountain and Dawson Peak so was familiar with the area.   It just looked a lot different before burning.    We had a break for lunch and enjoyed the views of the mountain peaks in front of us.   The PCT wraps around Wright Mountain (8,505) which is a high mountain, but the summit is in the trees so there is no view like on all the other surrounding peaks.  We decided to peak bag Wright mountain which another trail from the PCT lead us to the near the top.  The trail disappears and we had to hunt a little bit to find the pile of rocks that marks the summit.  We didn't have to backtrack and just took a short cut over the other side of the mountain that eventually led us back the PCT.

To the left there were cliffs that dropped down to the town of Wrightwood.  The fire came very close to Wrightwood so not only was the burned area to our right it also went on down the cliff to our left.  The trail meandered downward all the way to where we dropped off our car in the morning.   There was a section we could even see down to where I parked my car near the road.  Just when we thought we were almost back to the car, the trail turned right and went around Gobblers Knob.  This was discouraging tho we got to see another section down to Lytle Creek from way high above that was just spectacular.  Eventually we connected to the section we did last time and made the trek down the road a half mile back to our car.
